About Us

 The Pham Discrete Mathematics Research Group is dedicated to advancing research in combinatorics, graph theory, discrete geometry, and related areas of discrete mathematics. Our work explores both theoretical and computational approaches to fundamental problems, with interests spanning extremal combinatorics, graph algorithms, geometric combinatorics, and mathematical problem solving.

A central goal of the group is to provide meaningful research opportunities for students at all levels. Undergraduate researchers are encouraged to engage with current mathematical questions, develop problem-solving and proof-writing skills, and contribute to ongoing projects. Through seminars, collaborative discussions, and independent investigations, group members gain experience in the research process and the communication of mathematical ideas. We welcome students who are interested in exploring research in discrete mathematics and related fields.

Dr. Andrew Pham

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR 

Dr. Andrew Pham is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics in the Department of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at Alabama A&M University. His research interests lie primarily in discrete mathematics and graph theory, with current work focusing on domination theory, bondage numbers and their variations, and applications of the discharging method. Dr. Pham is committed to introducing students to mathematical research early in their academic careers. Through the Pham Discrete Mathematics Research Group, students have opportunities to engage in research projects, develop mathematical communication and problem-solving skills, and present their work at conferences and undergraduate research symposia.In addition to his research and teaching activities, Dr. Pham is dedicated to mentorship, community engagement, and expanding access to opportunities in mathematics and STEM fields.

My name is Seth Joseph, and I’m an incoming senior at the Downingtown STEM Academy in Pennsylvania, where I’m pursuing the International Baccalaureate diploma with a focus on mathematics and science. In my spare time, I like to do things that challenge me in many different ways, such as competing in soccer or playing chess. Outside of that, I also enjoy watching shows and spending time with friends and family. Working in math, I’ve come to appreciate the way it pushes me to approach unfamiliar problems with both curiosity and persistence while continuing to think creatively through new challenges.

Hello, I am Uchenna Justin, an Honors senior Computer Science major at Alabama A&M University. I have a strong interest in mathematics, algorithms, and problem-solving, particularly in areas where mathematical theory and computer science intersect. Throughout my academic journey, I have enjoyed exploring concepts in discrete mathematics, data structures, and algorithm design, which have strengthened my analytical and critical-thinking skills. I am especially interested in understanding how mathematical principles can be applied to solve real-world complex computational problems. My name is Itiza Subedi, a Computer Science undergraduate at Alabama A&M University. My interests include software engineering, AI, and machine learning, along with experience in full-stack development and research in graph theory and algorithms. The Pham Discrete Mathematics Research Group welcomes motivated students interested in combinatorics, graph theory, discrete geometry, and related areas of mathematics. Prior research experience is not required. Curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to tackle challenging problems are the most important qualifications.

Group members have opportunities to participate in research projects, attend research meetings, develop mathematical communication skills, and present their work at undergraduate research symposia and conferences.

Students interested in joining the group are encouraged to contact Dr. Andrew Pham to learn more about current research opportunities. Currently, there are no paid positions available for 2026.
